Norethindrone (sometimes spelled norethisterone outside the U.S.) is a synthetic form of progesterone (a progestin). It is used for several gynecologic conditions, including:
- Delaying a menstrual period
- Treating heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Managing endometriosis
- As a component of some hormonal contraceptives
How is it typically taken?
To delay a period, norethindrone is generally started about 3 days before your expected period. A common regimen is:
- 5 mg by mouth three times daily
It is continued until you’re ready for your period to occur, often for up to 10–14 days. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosing and duration for your situation.
Who should avoid norethindrone?
- Norethindrone may not be appropriate for people with:
- A history of blood clots or certain clotting disorders
- Certain types of liver disease
- Some hormone-sensitive cancers (such as certain breast cancers)
- Unexplained vaginal bleeding that has not been evaluated
